Shop trading hours
Sir, — It would appear that there are more levelheaded people among the “rank and file” of the shop employees’ union than, there are among the officials. The very people who were adversely affected by ■ a week-end strike, the public, are those who would •be most likely to oppose unnecessary longer shopping hours at some future date.. To express unified opposition at a special meeting is one thing; but the time to strike will be when the employees are called upon to work the extra time. The figures of the ballot voting are very interesting, but one wonders how many votes were cast by responsible adults. It would appear that many who voted for an immediate strike were teenagers without family responsibility. Strikes without purpose are wasteful crimi-
nal, offending against the rights of members, serving only to create bad feeling and to sustain the Federation of Labour’s 1975 promise of “continuous rolling strikes.” — Yours, etc., A. BROMLEY. July 19, 1980.
