Appointment of Mr Gill

Sir, — Today it was announced officially that Mr Gill will be this country’s next representative in Washington. In 1978 the voters of East Coast Bays elected him as their representative in Wellington. Does he not then have a prior obligation? He offered his services to East Coast Bays for three years and was accepted on that understanding. I suggest that he should not have been considered for any other position until the expiration of his present Parliamentary term. Precedents exists for the practice of resigning “House” membership for other governmental appointments. I think the practice should stop. It is an unethical abdication of electorate responsibility, and costs the taxpayer the unnecessary expense of a byelection. — Yours, etc., ... R. E. BOWDEN, Nelson. July 18, 1980.
