Music and culture
Sir, — Matthew Thomas (July 19), has clearly misconstrued .my defence of the! modern music fraternity, and seems to think I am championing a lost and meaningless cause; he goes on to say that this “alleycat music with Armageddon is easy to switch off “and I am only 21,” he adds as though having acquired sophistication at an early age. He also challenges -Paul Fleming’s claim (July* 16) that punk and new wave music is serious and factual; Mr Thomas calls such people “morons” and I sincerely hope that when I am 90, (in 60 years time), I can dance to anything and be inspired by “all music” without being classified as a “moron” and locked away. If at 21, Mr Thomas thinks he has . come of age to define and moralise in regard to music, then his is not a sophistication I would wish to acquire. — Yours, etc., A. G. THOMPSON. July 19, 1980.
