Orthopaedic care

Sir, — Orthopaedic medicine anil care are in a dy j namic state of growth. As : working hours lessen, and; . more emphasis is placed on recreation and leisure people in general are playing more sport, and being involved in

activities where injuries to limbs are more likely to happen. The energy crisis is encouraging more' people to use motor-cycles and bicycles. This unprotected form of transport is also a contributing factor as Ministry of Transport statistics . will prove. The shortage of hospital beds, nursing care and doctors in this area of medicine all' point towards the chronic state orthopaedics finds itself in. Because of the country’s economic state and the tight ■budget hospital boards have, extra money cannot be found to cope. Perhaps a redistribution of funds and the chanelling off of monies from cancer, heart care and other areas could help. Let us just hope that the vari? ous forms of officialdom, hospital boards, Government, and local bodies quickly come to grips with the problem and take positive steps now. — Yours, etc., P. D. JOHNSTON, July 16, 1980.
