Free enterprise
Sir, I read with amusement the justifications of the “free enterprise” system proffered by some of your correspondents. As a teenager as yet unbiased by vested interests in any system, I wonder how many of these apologists are middle-aged and . have' done well out of capitalism? So “free, enterprise” leads to “soaring material and spiritual achievements that only freedom can offer.” (T. Loudon, July 16.) Why, then, in the United States, where' this system has reached its highest level of. development, are more hospital beds being used for the treatment of the mentally ill than for all physical diseases, accidents and illnesses put together? If “free enterprise” inspires such wonders in its citizens, why does America have so high an incidence of mental illness? Lastly, with its frightening crime rate, America cannot claim to promote individual responsibility, as T. Loudon claims of “freedom.” No wonder capitalism is dying. — Yours, etc.. A. MOORE.
