Junior team off to good start
NZPA Correspondent Sydney.
The New Zealand junior hockey team got off to a good start in its Australian tour with an 8-0 win over Victoria Country- at Geelong on Saturday. “It was a very pleasing result, and a great start for them,” said the team manager, Mr G. D. Miskimmin, yesterday. “The win indicates that they can develop into a fine team,” he said.
The first goal came after only
five minutes, with a beautiful solo run by tile centre forward, lan Riach, who shot the ball into the Austraian goal. The second goal came when Peter Daji, the 20-year-old Aucklander selected for the Olympics this year, found the back of the net from a penalty comer rebound, and that was quickly followed on half-time when the captain, Greg Pierce, scored from a penalty stroke to give the New Zealanders u 3-0 lead. In the second half New Zea-
land completely dominated play, ■ overwhelming the Victorians ta • run up five more goals and win 8-0. Mr Miskimmin said that Pierce,' a 20-year-old university student' from Canterbury, had excep- ' tional control of mid-field play, . while liis fellow Cantabrian, Riach, played very well at centre forward.
