Weather mars women’s matches
Wet and cold conditions marred the senior women’s hockev matches played at Hospital 'Comer on Saturday. Carlton beat Cranmer in a verv even game. Harewood was too' goed for Woolston I, Burnside had a comfortable win over University, and Linwood United beat the newly promoted Woolston 11. Results. —Division I: Carlton 1, Cranmer 0; Harewood 3, Woolston I 1. Division 11. Burnside 4, University 0; Linwood 2, Woolston II 1. Carlton v. Cranmer
This game was particularly even, but generally uninspiring. There were too many mistakes and uncontrolled passing for this to be a memorable match. Carlton had a bigger share of possession in the first half, but some wild hitting cost the side dearlv. The only goal of the match came two minutes before half-time when a strong shot by Shirley Haig beat the Cranmer goal-keeper.
Cranmer began the second half in determined and impressive fashion, but weaknesses ip front of the Carlton goal, combined with a safe and sure Carlton defence, prevented any addition to the score. At right back for Cranmer and Carlton respectively, Dawn Wilson and Jill Te Karu, both had good games. Harewood v. Woolston I
Harewood beat Woolston basically because it made use of its scoring ’ opportunities, whereas Woolston, which had many more, failed to capitalise on its chances. Harewood’s first goal came late in the first half by Alison Sutherland, after good work by Marie Flannery on the right wing. Woolston attacked purposefully after the interval, but bad passing spoilt many promising moves. Miss Sutherland scored her second goal from a penalty stroke and added a third later. Julie Reid, who had missed a
great chance in the first half, scored Woolston’s only goal from a corner. Margaret Read, at inside right for Woolston, played well and twice came close to scoring in the second half. Burnside v. University
Both teams took some time to settle down. University made the early running and forced several penalty corners which were comfortably dealt with by the Burnside defence.
Jane Earnshaw gave Burnside the lead and slowly but surely it gained control. Five minutes after half-time Judy Phillips scored with a strong shot. Leigh McCleary. breaking from defence, made a fine solo run down the middle of the pitch to score the third goal, and Judy Phillips scored her second to end the scoring. Linwood United v. Woolston II This was a fairly sprappy match, but Margaret O’Brien made sure Linwood would not be beaten by scoring twice in the first half.
Debbie Hockley almost pulled one back for Woolston when her shot hit the cross-bar and was scrambled clear of the goalmouth. With its rearranged forward line, Linwood showed better combination and had more penetration in its play. Just before the final whistle, Gaynor Lund ended a good solo run by scoring for Woolston.
