Love by letter The sequel to “84 Charing Cross Road,” a story which featured on the National programme last year, can be heard on the National programme bookreading slot from this morning at 8.45. Entitled ‘‘The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street.” this book tells the story of a love affair by correspondence between the author, Miss Helene Hanff, of New York, and Messrs Marks and Company, sellers of rare and secondhand books in London. In 1971 Helene was finally able to make a trip to London and “The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street” is the diary of her six-week visit. Cathy Strong, who read the part of Helene in “84 Charing Cross Road,” takes the same role again in "The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street.” Extracts will be broadcast on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays each week for the next eight weeks.

W. Indies books The literary output of the West Indies is the topic for today’s programme in the series on Commonwealth literature. Roderick Cave, professor of librarianship at Victoria University, spent several years living and working in the West Indies and has entitled his talk “A Shaker and a Shouter and a Myal Man.” He sees himself as an “interested outsider” to West Indian culture. His broad overview is pertinent because of the diverse mixture of tongues and traditions that exist in West Indian culture. Concert programme, 7 p.m. Classical trio

The esteemed Baux Arts Trio, of New York, was recorded at an Auckland concert when they toured earlier this year. From that concert they can be heard playing the Mozart Piano Trio in B flat, K. 502 and Mendelsshon’s Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 49. Concert programme, 8.02 p.m.
