Another new service to Latin America
Another new conventional and container shipping sendee between New Zealand and Central and South America has been announced by Capital Shipping Services, Ltd, agents for the national line of Venezuela, C.A. Veneziona de Navegacion. The new service, scheduled to start in October, plans to call at all major New Zealand and Australian ports on an every six weeks’ basis. A Venezuelan Embassy spokesman said that plans call for the line’s vessels to serve the Venezuelan ports of La Gualra, Maracaibo, and Puerto Cabello. He said that, as well, ports in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador, El Salvador. Costa Rica, and Mexico would also be served by transhipment. If, however, sufficient cargo was availably, direct calls could be made at such ports.
How much oil is there In an oil slick floating on the surface of the sea? At last week’s oil pollution seminar at Lyttelton, Captain D. Davies of the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport admitted that, unless it could be ascertained how much oil had been lost from anv given vessel, calculation of the amount of oil in a spill would be nearly impossible to estimate. One factor is known about oil slicks, however, and that is that they tend to move at onethirtieth the speed of the wind. Thus, if a slick were being driven; by a 30 knot wind, it would move at about one knot. ARRIVALS Saturday Nil. .Sunday Union Hobart (11.18 a.m.) 4376, Dunedin (U.S.S.). DEPARTURES Saturday Nil.
