Grandmother wins title
PA Dunedin An Otago woman and grandmother of six has been named Rural Woman of the Year at the annual conference of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, at Dunedin. Mrs Jean McCOrkindale. of Manuka Creek, 20km south of Milton, won the title from four other finalists.
Mrs McCorkindale lived on a 330-hectare hillcountry sheep /farm since her marriage 33 years ago. She was , formerly a schoolteacher. A Mrs McCorkindale joined the W.D.F.F. 29 years ago as a foundation member of the GlenoreManuka branch, of which she is still a member. < Contestants were judged oh general and farming knowledge, dress, deportment, and knowledge and involvement in the W.D.F.F.
The competition was sponsored by the “Australian Women’s Weekly” and Air New Zealand. The prize is a 12-day trip to New South Wales as a guest of the New South W a l e s Agricultural Bureau. Mrs McCorkindale will also attend an agricultural conference,’ . ■ The four other. finalists were Mesdames’ .Louisa Avery (North ■’ branch, Marlborough provincial); Mrs ' : Christine DOnelley (Kiripaka branch, Marsden provincial); Merilyn Feicker "(Scots Ferry branch, Rangitikei-Oraoua provincial); and Mrs Jean Henderson (Paterangi branch, Waipa provincial). The judges of the contest were Mrs G. King (W.D.F.F), Mr J. Webster (Young Farmers), Mr W. Loffhagen (Air New Zealand), and Mrs P. Jephson ("Australian Women’s Weekly”).
