'Tramp’ leaves $421,000
(NZPA London Neighbours of a “Scroogetype” recluse who rifled their dustbins were stunned yesterday to hear that he was worth more than $421,000.
Now they are wondering where the former farm labourer. William Lewis, who died last April in his late seventies, got his money.
Mr Lewis once of Wales lived out his last years with his brother, George, in south London.
After his will was published locals described him as a lonely eccentric, frequently to be seen going through their dustbins. “He was more like a tramp (you could find under Waterloo Bridge,” said Mrs Eileen Brancaccio. "We would never have known that he had two pennies to rub together. His brother often apologised to us for him, saying that we had to forgive his country ways. “He had a social worker, and meals-on-wheels were delivered to him regularly.”
