Residents to look at recycling
About 25 residents of Burw'ood Road and Prestons Road decided on Saturday to investigate a local rubbish recycling scheme. A mem.ber of the residents’ committee (Mr A. R. Birkbeck), said yesterday that the recycling scheme would show the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee w’hat could and should be done with rubbish. It would also be an effective way to oppose the proposed Waimairi landfill site. The residents’ meeting also decided to support the Waimairi Coastal Protection Committee by raising funds and supplying technical data. The residents will also oppose any application by the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee for'a water right connected with the landfill proposal. “We are all very concerned about the effect which the landfill proposal will have on the water table in this area,” Mr Birkbeck said.
“It has been badly affected by flooding in the past and any.extra pressure from compacted refuse will act as a dam, , preventing water reaching the sei,”
