Cultural conflict warning

PA Wellington Any deliberate depression of the main cultures within New Zealand could only lead to conflict, the member for Northern Maori (Dr B. C. Gregory) told Parliament yesterday in his maiden speech. “Otherwise there will develop a continuing polarisation of people,” he said. This would lead to Maori separatist politics; a growing number of disenchanted people in crime; racial hatred; poor educational attainment; poverty; and injustice.

He. said the fact that the. Government had underspent the Maori Affairs budget was an indictment when a significant number of Maori youth were unemployed.
