Top wrestling competition
Although disappointed at being rejected by New Zealland’s Olympic Games selectors earlier this year this country’s leading, amateur wrestlers will not want for ' international competition over the next 12 months.
An Australian squad will attend the New Zealand championships in Christchurch next week and the Australians have reciprocated by inviting a New Zealand team to take part in an open tournament in Melbourne late next month. The chairman of the New Zealand Amateur Wrestling Association (Mr J. A. McInnes) said that the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia had also indicated
their acceptances of invitations to be represented in the epanded 19S1 Pacific Games.
A decision on tire venue for the wrestling section of the Games will be made shortly, Mr Mclnnes said.
All competitors at the national championships at the Pioneer Stadium will be issued with special medallions to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the sport in New Zealand. One of the features of the tournament, and one sure to bring back many old memories, is the veterans competition to be held next Thursday. It has been divided into over-40 and under-40 divisions and bouts will be of two two-minute rounds.
