P.M. off to Pacific Forum

PA Wellington The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) leaves today, for the South Pacific Forum which could be dominated by discussion on the tense situation in the New Hebrides. , . r The New Hebrides Chief Minister (the Rev. Walter Lini) is due at Tarawa, capital of Kiribati, for the forum, at which his country will become its thirteenth member.

Diplomatic sources say the New Hebrides is certain to be admitted, even if Britain and France have not publicly accepted th proposed ,’uly 30 independence date before the forum starts. But there are likely to be calls by some forum members for firm uctio, if there is no word from Britain and France on the independence date before the forum gets under way on Monday. “It could be the single, most contentious issue,” one diplomat said. France’s attitude to independence for New Caledonia and Tahiti, a contentious issue at last year’s forum at Honiara, is likely to be raised again at Tarawa — as is the issue of French nuclear tests at Mururoa.
