Cable fault not serious
PA Wellington A fault discovered in one of the. three Cook Strait electricity cables would not affect power supplies to either islan ’, said a Ministry of Energy spoke-man in Wellington yesterday. At first it was thought the fault was in an undersea section of ‘he cable, said the spokesman, Mr I. M. Crabtree. But it was located in an insulator join in the No. 3 cable at Fighting Bay on the eastern tip of Marlborough Sounds, north of Blenheim. “The insulator is between a land cable and the sea cable in a large concrete ‘coffin’.” Mr Crabtree said. “It will take two to three months for a crew to repair the cable but we do not see any’ problem about it.” Mr Crabtree said there were three cables between the islands but only two were used regularly, the third being on standby for emergencies. ‘
