Sensational withdrawal

NZPA Pau, France The French cycling ace, Bernard Hinault sensationally pulled out of the “Tour de France” late yesterday at the half-way point in the event. Hinault, the over-all tour leader and aiming for a third successive victory in the Toun had been troubled in recent days by a tendon injury on his right knee.

After announcing his decision, Hinault — visibly upset by the bad luck that struck last week-end on the muscle-jarring cobblestones of northern Belgium — left immediately for his hometown of Iffiniac in Britanny. The new tour leader is Joop Zoetemelk, of The Netherlands, leader of the powerful Raleigh team, which has reaped 10 stage victories so far.
