Culverden bulls do well

Against expectations, two-year-old Hereford and Angus bulls had an excellent sale at Culverden. The number of breeding cows being farmed at present is much less than

last year and this had been expected to have had a serious effect on bull sales in the coming few months.

The Culverden sale was slightly over-subscribed and consequently some bulls sold below values they would have brought last year. However, satisfactory prices were reached for most of the offering.

At last year’s Culverden sale Herefords averaged $lOB5 but this average was boosted by a sale of $7OOO. This time the average was $1059 for 38 bulls selling from $6OO to $2OOO.

The average for Angus bulls increased and emphasised the improvement in the bulls of this breed compared with last year’s sale. This year, the Angus average was $894 compared with $847 last year. Last year’s top price was $2200; this year it was $l6OO.

The total entry was 78 (94 last year), with 14 passed in and eight withdrawn. The best of the Hereford averages was released by the Huit Hui Stud, which is run by G. L. and E. A. Dunster (Hawarden). It sold 12 bulls for between $6OO and $2OOO for an average of $1220. The best Agnus average fell to G. G. Gardner’s Glenkari Stud, at Scargill. Hes old two bulls for between $750 and $l5OO at an average of $1125.

Several bulls went to the West Coast and Kai-

koura. The balance went to North Canterbury, MidCanterbury, and to Nelson buyers. The top-selling Hereford went to J. C. Streeter (Amberley). St James station (Hanmer Springs) bought the top-priced Angus. Hereford herd averages were: J. R. and A. J. Davison (Culverden), six at $6OO to $l5OO, average $983; G. M. Burrows (Culverden), 8 at $6OO to $l9OO, average $1037; R. J. Burrows (Culverden), 2 at $7OO to $l6OO, average $1150; R. J. and M. A. Burrows (Culverden), 3 at $7OO to $l2OO, average $916; G. L. C. a nd E. A. Dunster (Hawarden), 12 at $6OO to $2OOO, average $1220; Jandoc Hereford Stud (Hawarden), 2 at $BOO to $l3OO, average, $1050; M. M. Calder (Culverden), 3 at $6OO to $9OO, average $783. Angus herd averages were: G. G. Gardner (Scargill), 2 at $750 to $l5OO, average $1125; P. J. Gardner (Scargill), 5 at $6OO to $l5OO, average $1020; G. and W. Chisnall (Hawarden), 8 at $6OO to $l6OO, average $850; B. J. and D. F. Johns (Culverden), 3 at $6OO to $750, average $650.
