Chch unionist standing

A Christchurch trade unionist, Mr N. W. Harris, is standing for the top position in the Printers’ Union. To win the ballot for president of the 11,000member union, Mr Harris will have to poll higher than the incumbent, Mr W. H. Clement, and an Auckland printer, Mr K. Johnson, who was on the list of members of the Socialist Unity Party released by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) in March. Mr Johnston is on the union’s board of management. A ballot is also being run for the position of union secretary, after the resignation of Mr S. P. Marks, who has returned to Britain. The candidates are Messrs P. Gaskin and C. Chiles of Auckland and D. Stedman of Dunedin. The ballot closes on July 16 and results are expected to be announced about July 18.
