Harbour ‘oil spill’ planned

The Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport, in conjunction with the Lyttelton Harbour Board, wiil hold an oil pollution training programme at Lyttelton on July 10. The morning sessions of the programme will include a discussion of the Marine Pollution Act and the role of the Ministry and trie harbour board in the event of a spill, contingency planning at the local level, and films on beach cleaning and dispersant spraying.

Techniques designed for use on both shore and water will be explained together with the use of absorbents and the equipment and materials which the Ministry keeps on hand in case of an oil spillage. In the afternoon, the oil dispersal equipment will be rigged aboard the tug Godley for a practical demonstration.
