Moscow Olympics

Sir, — After careful consideration, I have decided not to attend the 1980 Olympics as a spectator. Although I face up to $l2OO in defaulted deposits, I feel in all conscience I could not attend a Games which has become the subject of political propaganda and interference. One of the strongest principles of the Olympics: that of international understanding and good will has been undermined by constant political pressure, as the Russians embark on a programme of communistic imperialism. While admiring the decision our athletes have taken, I cannot but help feel sympathy with them, and the sooner the Olympic movement comes to grip with its original aims the better. Only a return to a permanent Olympic Games in Greece can surely allow this? While the National Government, which condoned sporting contacts with South Africa, has now had an about-face and succumbed to interference, it has not really shown the leadership that one might have expected. — Yours, etc» CHRIS HAYWARD. June 14, 1980.
