Drinking patterns

Sir, — Some readers of “The Press” would like to know where Lindsay Image of the North. Canterbury Hospital Board’s Alcohol Assessment Centre, got' the idea that “families with strongly teetotal parents had a higher alcoholism rate than families of social drinkers?” Research conducted by

the New Zealand Council for Education Research revealed that young people continued in the pattern of the example set by parents, whether it be to drink, or net to drink. It came as a shock to find that 79 per cent drank and 68 per cent of these were taught to drink at home. It is obvious that this upsurge and acceptance of youthful drinking, is spawning many alcoholics, especially in a climate of unemployment. The World Health Organisation tells us that the- alcoholism rate increases with the increase in consumption which points very dramatically to more rigid control of alcohol. — Yours, etc.. (Mrs) H. A. F. WOOD, Legal and Parliamentary Director,. New Zealand Women’s Christian Temperance Union. June 15, 1980.
