Ash covers frigate

NZPA Washington The New Zealand Navy frigate Otago had an unusual welcome when, she arrived at Portland, Oregon, for a four day visit: within a few hours she was covered in ash from the rupting volcano Mount St Helens. The eruption happened five hours after the Otago, which is in Portland to mark the city’s annual rose festival, had tied up at the w’aterfront on the Williamette River last Thursday night.

The ship’s communications officer, Lieutenant Owen Young, said all deck machinery such as fans, which suck in air, had been ;.shut down during the eruption and the decks had :been cleared of all but necessary personnel. Those . who had had to be on duty had . been issued with gauze masks. By daylight about smm of ash had covered the decks. The Otago is to have exercises with the United States Navy before returning home via Hawaii.
