Crash traps woman in car
A young woman was trapped in the mangled wreckage of her Mini car (above) for 40 minutes after an accident involving a Christchurch Transport Board bus, a van, and four other cars in Colombo Street yesterday morning. The woman, who had to be cut free by firemen, was in a satisfactory condition in Princess Margaret Hospital last evening with moderate head and chest injuries. Her name was not available. Another woman and the driver of the bus were treated for shock and minor injuries. The passengers on the bus were not injured in the accident, which occurred about 8.30 a.m. at the intersection of Colombo. Street and Tennyson Street, Beckenham. Rush-hour traffic in Colombo Street was delayed for some time while the woman was freed and the damaged vehicle, two of which were parked cars, towed away.
In Auckland, a threebus collision in the central city yesterday left five passengers injured, t Two Of the Auckland Regional Authority buses were emnty, but the third contained at least 15 passengers, including a dozen students.
The 8.55 a.m. collision in Symonds Street threw passengers forward; into the backs of seats. Six people were taken to Auckland Hospital by ambulance and five of them were treated. Nine passengers were going to schools and three were going to Epsom Teachers’ College. Another passenger was a nun. The nose-to-tail accident left the road covered in shattered glass and oil. While two ambulances took passengers away, firemen and traffic officers cleaned up. Traffic was disrupted for more than half an hour.
