Research on rugby injuries

PA Wellington - Devising methods to counter cervical injuries in rugby has been described as “hard yakker.” At the council meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union in Wellington, the chairman of the national coaching committee (Mr Bob Stuart) presented a. report based on a detailed report by the Medical Advisory Committee.

“Somehow, there is a feeling .that we are not concerned about these injuries,” he said. “It is just not true, for much research has been going on for a considerable period. “Trying to get messages across to all concerned is hard yakker.” Presenting the medical committee’s report, Dr Humphrey Gowland said it was based on 16 months’

delving into instances -of serious injuries. “The creation of more awareness is essential, and after trying to identify the problem, our thoughts are that it must be a continuing study,” he said. Mr Stuart said fitness, conditioning, and proficiency in skills would help minimise dangers but unless the subjects were willing learners, even the best coaching failed. ' “It’s an emotional area and we must ensure that referees, coaches, and players are made fully aware of the various steps we are taking.” Mr W. Freeman said the area of physical education, particularly at primary school level, received low play. Perhaps there should be “much more noise made” in early education, he said.
