Sydney trainer’s four wins
Special correspondent Sydney Soon, perhaps, there will be queues at the Rosehill stables of trainer Paul Sutherland trying to get into syndicates with horses he trains. Sutherland is a former country trainer, who moved to the Sydney suburban track with a few horses he had bought in New Zealand. He rides them himself before he buys, and obviously he is a judge' of the likelihood of their improving. Last Saturday at Randwick he brought off what hundreds of trainers dream about — he won four of the nine races, and not one was a fluke. His team of six has grown to 23, and most of them are owned by syndicates. Saturday’s winners were Saintette, Winavale Beau, Happy Landing, and Crispin. Saintette is a two-year-old by St Puckle from Fair Dash, that was having her third run after a spell, and was following a very impressive third at RosehilL This time she had an extra 200 m and it suited her admirably for in the heavy going she was always handy, and raced away ni the straight. She is a very late foal, a big rangy filly,, which now
is to be spelled ■ and ■ developed as an Oaks candidate in accordance with the plan when Sutherland bought her for' $19,000, a bigger sum than usual for him to pay for a-young horse. Windvale Beau was having only his - second start in Australia, and the four-year-old by Beaufort Sea fropi Graemel, with two wins and a second from his last three starts in New Zealand, made
no mistake in the 1200 m sprint in which he met a strong field. • Sutherland expected him to win, for the gelding was a good fifth at Rosehill behind his stablemate Happy Landing. ' Windvale Beau certainly looks one to pick up a really top class sprint before he finishes his career. It was a relief to Sutherland to- see Happy Landing, a four-year-old by Abridge Member' from Jane Blithe follow up the win at Rosehill at his previous start, for the gelding had let the stable down several times. Crispin, a four-year-old -by Serenader from Miss Cris, also has been a disappointment,- and in fact had not won since early in December. His race this time was over 2000 m and bold tactics were adopted to see if a change in luck could be effected. Former Brisbane apprentice, Myles Plum, now . with Sutherland and the rider of the three earlier winners was told t’o drop out, wait for the field to run wide on the turn in search of the better going and ride hard down the rails. Plum did exactly that and Crispin won by two lengths and a half.
