Chemistry students’ reprieve

About 600 chemistry students who had their midyear examination disrupted by a fire alarm earlier this week have been told they will “get the benefit of' the doubt” when it comes to end-of-year marking and grading. The head of the chemistry department at the University of Canterbury (Professor J. Vaughan) said yesterday that the test would-be taken into account, but the department would do its best to give the' benefit of the doubt to the students.

Marking had been done in such a way that no student would suffer because of the interrpution. The test would be marked but the result would be considered only if it improved the student’s end-of-year performance. If any student still felt disadvantaged by circumstances, a fresh test could be arranged Professor Vaughan'said.
