Beds for all women

No pregnant woman in Christchurch will be denied a bed in a public hospital maternity unit once the new arrangement for allotting beds at the Christchurch Women’s Hospital comes into use. -

The medical superinten-dent-in-chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr R. A. Fairgray) said yesterday that patients for the “open” beds at the Christchurch Women’s Hospital would be selected according to a list of priorities. These would take account of the need for specialist care, the location of the patient’s home, and the needs of high risk patients. “There will always be a bed available,” he said. Pregnant women would be told “at least” 12 weeks before delivery where they had been allotted a bed.
