Born-again ‘hatchet man’ to visit Chch

A “born again” member of President Richard Nixon’s administration, who fell from power during the Watergate scandal and was .later imprisoned, will speak in Christchurch on August 30. Mr Charles (Chuck) Colson, who has started Christian prison fellowships in several countries since his prison term, will speak at Majestic House. He will also be in Wellington and Auckland during a short visit to New Zealand. Mr Colson was sentenced to- prison for obstructing the trial of Dr Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the controversial Pentagon Papers. A top adviser to the former President, Mr Colson was a

familiar figure in the Nixon administration. He was sometimes known as the White House “hatchet man” because of his methods. A Christchurch city councillor Cr P. N. ,G. Blaxall, first met Mr Colson about two years ago, after the publii cation of the former adviser’s first book, “Bom Again.” On a recent visit to Washington D.C., Cr Blaxall asked Mr Colson to visit Christchurch. Mr Colson has written an-' other book. “Life Sentence,”] concerning his work since imprisonment. A television movie, starring the W’alt Disney actor, Dean Jones, has been made showing his career and conversion.
