Free enterprise
Sir, — The recent rise of the numerous extreme Right-wing groups proclaiming the individual’s freedom for free enterprise is alarming. So much of private enterprise is geared for creating profit rather than the satisfaction of genuine needs. Large amounts of our precious natural resources are wasted in the production of useless goods which can only be sold to the public if we can be convinced that we need them. Thus, free enterprise often creates a false market for its goods rather than answering public needs. By. allowing free enterprise 'to expand unrestricted we can only hasten the eventual collapse of our materialistic society. In the long run our freedom will be restricted! Instead, we must look towards a social system in which the purpose of production is the satisfaction of people’s genuine needs, not profit. — Yours, etc., ANNA FITZGERALD. April 22 s 1980.
