Toppled Liberia officials executed

NZPA-Reuter Monrovia Liberia

Liberia’s new military rulers have executed 13 officials in the overthrown Government of President William Tolbert. The official Radio Liberia said that the officials had been executed yesterday by firing squad after being convicted of high treason, corruption, and violations, of civil rights.

The executed officials included six former Cabinet Ministers and Frank Tolbert, the brother of President Tolbert, who was shot dead at the presidential palace dur-

ing the April 12 military coup.

They had been tried by the military tribunal set up by the People’s Redemption Council headed by Sergeant Samuel Doe, the new head of State. Sergeant Doe told a news conference yesterday that the army would return to barracks as soon as the council had eradicated corruption in the country. Radio Elwa, a Liberian missionary broadcasting station, quoted Sergeant Doe as saying that his Government would welcome all foreign investment of benefit to the country.
