Top league player off to Auckland
By
JOHN COFFEY
Rex Dalzell, the Canterbury and South Island rugby league front-row forward, will have, only three more . matches for his Linwood club, befpre transferring to Auckland. ■ - One of the most mobile props in ■ first-class football, : Dalzell will join his firmls head, office in Auckland, on promotion as a sales repre--1 sentative. [ A former schoolboy Kiwi and captain of the New Zealand 19-years ,team in 1973, Dalzell' made his debut for Canterbury the next season and has; ,made 23 appearances for the province. During the summer of 1976-77 he . furthered his rugby league experience with the powerful Warrington, club in England and he was a replacement. in two matches for South Island last year. Dalzell intends to take part in the South Island coaching school which begins at the Show Grounds this evening and is com-
pleted with an island trial on Sunday. But because of his move to Auckland he will riot be available for the South Island teams to oppose Australia and take part in the inter-districts championship. An injury' prevented Dalzell from playing in Canterbury’s, opening game against Wellington on Easter Sunday, but he retained his, place in the squad and was [a. replacement in the decisive victon' over West Coast last Saturday. ' Dalzell said yesterday that he had managed to delay the timing of his transfer until May 15 so that he could be in the Linwood pack for its vital N.Z.I.G. premiership game against Marist-Western Suburbs the previous evening. He has not yet decided which club he will join in Auckland.
Because Dalzell is shifting in the course of his employment, no transfer fee will be payable under the New Zealand Rugby League regulations.
