Record time by solo yachtsman

NZPA Plymouth, England The British yachtsman, David Scott-Cowper, sailed into Plymouth yesterday to set a record time for a s i n g 1 e-handed round-the-world voyage. A flotilla of boats bustled around the lone sailor’s yacht and hundreds of people gathered on the shore to welcome him as he completed the hazardous vouage after 249 days. Mr Scott-Cowper’s solo circumnaigation was 23 days a faster than the previous record of the New Zealander, Dame Naomi James, two years ago. It also broke by one day a

record set by the late Sir Francis Chichester, who spent 226 days actually at sea during his 1967 voyage. Sir Francis spent 48 days in Australia during the journey. Mr Scott-Cowper, who was due to be met yesterday by his wife Caroline, and their 21-month-old son, slipped virtually unnoticed out of Plymouth last year in his 12-metre yacht Ocean Bound.

During his voyage, the 38-year-old surveyor nearly capsized .ni mountainous seas, was becalmed in the Doldrums and plagued by problem with his steering gear and radio.
