Sales of land to overseas buyers
Sir.—“ The Press” of April 19, reports the Minister of Regional Development and Tourism (Mr Cooper) as saying there have been a large number of sales of Nt Zealand land to overseas buyers, and that the Coromandel farm sold to the Saudi Arabian Prince carried the “prospect” of $2O million being available to finance other industry, it is obvious from this that the Government is willing to authorise the sale of 25,000 farms to the highest overseas bidders to raise the $5 billion it intends spending on energy resource . development in the next 10 years. No prospective young farmer can compete with that. I am sure many real New Zealanders. pakeha and Maori, feel that our land is sacred and should never be sold in this way. After all what else have we? Just Wn; did our soldiers fight for? Sell our land! Sell our country! Have we no pride, no honestv? — Yours, etc., WARWICK HORNE, Jun., Kaikoura. April 20, 1980.
