Shop trading hours
Sir, —It was with interest we read of the visit by the Minister of Labour to Tasmania, the intention being to discuss shopping hours in that state. From this we see that the issue of shop trading hours is being reconsidered by the Government. Are we again going to see a decision made by a small, powerful minority and the people whose lives that decision affects have no say in that decision? The pressure being exerted to extend trading hours shows up a lot of what is happening in New Zealand. Shop workers, who are the group most affected, oppose any changes to the law, but the Government may bow to pressure from big business and retailers who have vested interests in longer hours. We feel strongly about this and urge other concerned people to find out, discuss and talk with others on the issues.—Yours, TRICIA MACKEY, EILEEN BROWN. April 17, 1980.
