Nicaragua

Sir, — The recent, article on Nicaragua (“The Press ” , April 15) clearly reflects the bias of the “Economist.” With no factual evidence, it states that Nicaragua is “drifting towards a new repression” and “tilting the wrong way.” For whom, one may ask? The land reform, massive literacy campaign and developments in social services show clearly that the Government is carrying out its. pledge to improve the lot of the poor. Cubin influence in Nicaragua is ■ hardly surprising. Both; countries overthrew corrupt dictatorships and, indeed, Cuba was one of the countries to give sanctuary ? to the Sandinistas while the West was still propping up. Somoza.- The Cuban presence, is unobtrusive, providing teachers and doctors, unlike . the heavy United States in-... fluence in neighbouring Guatemala with military advisors, multi-national companies and alien cultural, values. Indeed the writer seems to understand nothing of the aspirations of the Nicaraguans to build a new society in a distinctively Ni-- -' caraguan way. — Yours, etc., T. A. JACKSON. April 17, 1980.
