Sport in South Africa

Sir, — The Canterbury Rugby Union has washed its hands of making any commitment on a decision on the projected 1981 apartheid Springbok tour of this country. But it will no doubt be very pleased to share any monetary largesse that results from such a tour, in spite of what Mr M. R. Inglis is reported to have said. His view that rugby “has done more than any other sport” to solve some of the problems in South Africa is not echoed by the South African Rugby Union, the non-racist union which lives there. At the meeting of the South African Council on Sport last September, the secretary of S.A.R.U., Mr Ebrahim Patel, said, inter alia that “all is being done to stop South African tours to overseas countries.” The S.A.R.U. believes this is the best policy because a complete boycott forces changes on the Government there, not “bridge-building.” — Yours, etc., A. J. CAMPBELL. April 16, 1980.
