Sport Five matches on grand final day
Canterbury’s top 10 rugby league clubs will all be actively involved in what promises to be a fitting and spectacular climax to the season tentatively scheduled for September 14. Mr S. A. Gunby, the league’s secretary-manager, has formulated a plan which provides for five matches with at least $l5OO of the prize money sponsored by New Zealand Industrial Gases at stake.
The highlights will be the Canterbury championship grand final the contestants being found by the system which has proved highly successful since its introduction in 1967. The curtainraiser, as usual, is to be the Gore Cup final between the
clubs which fail to reach the championship play-offs. Another of the earlier games will also be of the utmost importance to the clubs involved. Mr Gunby’s programme includes a promotion-relegation fixture between the bottom premier team , and the top-placed junior club in the premier B competition. The other matches will decide third and fourth positions and seventh and eighth rankings for the year.
The prize money represents a sharp increase on the $6OO of last season. A cheque, which will also cover pm* motional costs, was presented to the Canterbury Rugby League earlier this week by a representative of N.Z.I.G. ,
