Orienteering courses
Christchurch orienteers will < take to the forests and sand- 1 hills at Spencer Park tomor- j row. i The course planner, Mr 1 Ken Sibly, has prepared a new map of the area, and hae 1 set three courses. t ‘ The A course will necessi- < tate demanding compass ' work through open undulat- ; ing pine forest. The terrain ! will be similar to the classi- : cal orienteering country of 1 Scandinavia where the sport 1 began. ’ The B and C courser, will be shorter, and their check- 1 points will be easier to find, 1 More emphasis will be on i tracks and fire-breaks, with i
compass work much less important. Fastest times are expecting to range from 20 minutes in the C course to over an hour for the A course. Orienteering is a fastgrowing sport. Events are held on Sundays about once every three weeks. Many winter sports participants are using orienteering for Sunday training. The shorter courses are popular with families who walk as a group. Beginners are always welcome. Sunday’s event at Spencer Park will be signposted from the main gates. Starting time is from 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
