Christchurch in golf final

John Williamson, a Canterbury Freyberg golfer for the first time last year, will be the lowest handicapped player in the national final of the Peter Stuyvesant club golf championship at the Middlemore course, Auckland, this weekend.
The 25-year-old Williamson, the Christchurch club’s' senior champion, will be joined by Stewart Betty and Peter Phelan,' the intermediate and junion cham-
pions of the club, respectively, in a bid to win the event for Canterbury for the first time. Christchurch won the regional final on February 24. Williamson, who recently won the senior plate at the Canterbury amateur championships, has twice won his club’s championship. He is on a plus one handicap. Betty, a managing director, is on a seven handicap. In his earlier years he was a promising cricketer, gaining - his New Zealand Universities “blue”
• in that sport and also repre- : senting Canterbury Colts t and a Canterbury XI. : Phelan, a 42-year-old comr pany director, started golf eight years ago and plays r off an 11 handicap. s The final, comprising the - regional champion club ; teams, is played over 54 ; holes of stableford without handicaps. The previous championi ships have been won by ■ Shandon (Wellington), St ; Clair (Otago), Hamilton ■ (Waikato) and Hastings (Hawke’s Bay).
