N.Z. apples popular in Europe
NZPA London The first of New Zealand’s new season apples have made a big impact on the European market. The shipment of 180,000 cartons of Cox’s Orange apples was unloaded at the Belgian port of Antwerp on April 11 and more than half the cargo had been sold by wholesalers by April 16. The Apple and Pear Board’s European director (Mr N. Guymer) said the fruit was of high quality, free of the bitter pit calcium deficiency that marred the first 1978 shipment, and was attracting high prices. On the Continent, the apples opened about iSNZ23 a carton, while in Britain the opening price was up to £9.20 (5NZ21.34), more than $1 above last year’s’ price.
