Old cars saved from fire
PA Auckland A handful ,of workers struggled amid 6m high flames to save rare vintage cars when the Bryan Jackson Museum at Mount Wellington, Auckland, caught fire last evening. The fire broke out at 5.30 p.m. Workers who live opposite the museum in Marua Road were the first on the scene. Rushing to ■ the museum doors they frantically battled to save the rare cars, many of which are irreplaceable. The only car not removed was a 1913 Star, said to be the only one of its kind in jthe world. Under the safety of a tarpaulin it suffered .only water damage to its paintwork. Fifty-five firemen and 16 appliances were used to con- ' jtain the blaze, which was extinguished within an hour and a half. The museum itself was not damaged but the fire gutted jthe top floor of the building, destroying the offices of Chiquita Fashions.
