Police had no shields
Police escorting student protesters on Wednesday were not equipped with shields and helmets as was reported in “The Press” yesterday., The commander of the Christchurch police district (Deputy Assistant Commissioner G. E. Twentyman) said that no shields had been at the scene but a police vehicle was in attendance carrying riot helmets. He said that the vehicle equipped with helmets was there as a matter of course in case of emergency. The police had had no intention of using the helmets because there had been no need. The incorrect report stemmed from the education officer for students at the University of Canterbury (Mr R. Arthur), who said that "riot gear” had been seen at the demonstration. A student had seen the helmets in the police vehicle and had mistakenly thought he had seen shields also.
