Special Chathams flight

Parliamentary reporter

A special relief flight to take food and mail to the Chatham Islands will leave Wellington tomorrow. The flight, which was arranged by the Department of Internal Affairs with Safe Air, Ltd, will ■take all outstanding air freight and mail together with a substantial order of

foodstuffs for the store at Waitangi. ' “The Press” reported yesterday that several shipments of food had not been delivered to the islands because priority had been given to housing, fencing, and construction materials.

The Deputy Secretary for Internal Affairs (Mr B. McLay), said yesterday that tomorrow’s flight had

been arranged immediately a request for assistance had been made by the Chatham Islands Commissioner (Mr W. Sewell). Any problem that had occurred with the transshipment of cargo to the Chatham Islands was related to the present substantial works programme being undertaken on the islands by the Government, Mr McLay said.
