Bill opposed
PA Rotorua "There was little hope that the Urban Transport Bill now before Parliament would be abandoned, delegates to'the Municipal Conference in Rotorua were told yesterday; r Answering a question by Mr Hamish Hay, the Mayor of Christchurch, the Minister of Local Government (Mr Highet) said he: could “not see any hope’s of the bill being abandoned. .'Mr Hay told the Minister that no other bill had been subjected to such widespread condemnation. / ■ - - “It gives the Minister of Transport wide powers of veto,” he said.. “Also, under
the bill there seems a strong likelihood of the Government’s transferring financial cost to the ratepayers.” Mr Hay said it was widely believed that the bill had been introduced without full consideration. He asked the Minister to use his efforts to have the bill abandoned. The Minister told the conference that both he and the Parliamentary Under-Secre-tary for Local Government (Mr Comber) “had shown reservations” about the bill. “But it is over to you (the local bodies) "to make responsible submissions so that we can amend the bill to something we all can live with,” the Minister said.
