Longer stay for Pacific Fruit?

The Taiwanese refrigerated meat carrier Pacific Fruit iB still at the non-functioning No. 7 East berth at Lyttelton while agents for her owner seek a means for her release from a $3 million ’ writ and an arrest warrant. The vessel arrived at Lyttelton for repairs on March 31 after having discharged her cargo of meat, rejected by the Iraqi authorities, at Timaru. A writ was placed against her by her former charterers, Nippon Yusen Kaisha, of Japan. Solicitors for the owner are reportedly working to have the writ lifted. She is owned by the Great Pacific Navigation Company of Taiwan. Before she is released from both writ and warrant, it is expected that a hearing Will have io be held at Christchurch. Her charterer, N.Y.K., has failed to renew its charter thus leaving the vessel the sole responsibility of her owner. While laying up at Lyttelton, where her repairs are virtually completed, she has not been working cargo and, therefore, only incurring a minimal fee for berthage. While the Pacific Fruit remains under arrest she is in the legal custody of the registrar of the High Court at Wellington. There has been speculation that her owners are reluctant to post a $3 million bond to have the writ lifted as the vessel is only worth about $1.5 million.
