Reform of rebates urged

More people would be excluded each year from receiving rates rebates if the Government did not take proper account of inflation, Cr Vicki Buck told the Christchurch City Council’s policy and finance committee yesterday. “People will suffer hardship if rebates are not tied to the cost of living,” she said.

This year, the maximum income limit of $4850 was not high enough to cover wage rises, and so fewer ratepayers might qualify for rebates at a time when rates would inevitably rise, Cr Buck said.

She suspected that it was part of a Government plan to phase out rebates over the years by not setting the’eligibility limit high enough.
