Thompson out for season?

Misfortune has struck the Belfast and Canterbury rugby forward, Dave Thompson, and it is unlikely he will play any rugby this winter. Thompson, a drainlaying contractor, was cutting down trees on Friday when he was struck by a falling branch. It came down on the back of his neck and he may have torn some ligaments. He is in hospital and will probably be on his back for at least six weeks. It could be some time before he is able to

pack down in a scrum again. It Is a great misfortune for Thompson. Primarily a No. 8 he has been used mainly as a flanker by Canterbury after coming into the team in 1974 as a lock. With Alex Wyllie now retired, Thompson was widely favoured to move to back of the Canterbury scrum this winter. He would also have been on the short list of possible captains, a role he filled in Wyllie’s absence last season.
