Soccer Western, Halswell top league table
Western and Halswell United moved to the top of the Hertz Soccer League after two rounds with contrasting, but deserved, victories over Woolston Working lien’s Club and Shamrock respectively on Saturday. A dramatic five-minute spell midway through the second half, when three goals were scored and one player sent off, decided the outcome of Western’s match with Woolston at English Park. Until then, the match had been fairly even, both teams, especially Woolston, having created several scoring chances but having been unable to fully capitalise cn them.
In the sixty-ninth minute, Ray Wild’s left wing • cross should ■have been cut out by a W’oolston defender. It was not, and the hard-working Phil Ayers raced in and headed the ball past Woolston’s goal-keeper, Rod Renfrew, for the opening goal. One minute later, Woolston’s young midfielder. Stuart Chalmers, was sent off for butting an opponent in the face, and a minute after this, John Brand put Western two goals ahead with a powerful header from seven metres.
In the seventy-third minute. Wild was put clear and pushed the ball past Renfrew from the edge of the Woolston penalty area’■for the final goal. Chalmers is the second player [to be sent off in the league in its opening two weeks. Halswell dominated much of its match with' the young Shamrock team at Riccarton Domain, and; won, 3-1, with goals by Rod Withers, Derek Jones, and Mark I.anauze. The second goal came right on half-time and the third 1
was scored just before the final whistle, Joe Mullins scored for Shamrock. Shamrock had two shots kicked off the line but, although it improved i.n the second half, Halswell was clearly the better side.
Nomads United paid dearly for two missed chances in the opening 10 minutes of its match with Cashmere-Wanderers. Cashmere won the match, 3-2, with goals by John Roberts and Robbie Noster before the interval and a penalty by us Neaves after half-time, while Grahame Moore scored just before the break and Bob Voss added Nomads’ second goal seven minutes from the end. New Brighton was a worthy 2-0 winner over a gallant Timaru Citv team at Queen Elizabeth n Park 2, with Warren Quirke scoring both goals. Brighton had opportunities to increase its score, but eventualily had to settle for two goals, and its first win of the league. HERTZ LEAGUE
