Hill sections ‘in demand’
Reasonably. priced, pleasant, and safe residential sections are in demand on the Port Hills and in Heathcote Valley, according to a surveyor, Mr' D. A. Hall. Mr Hall was making submissions to the Heathcote County Council’s district scheme review hearings committee on behalf of the Bowenvale Farming Company. He was cross-ofijecting on issues related to increased urban development on the Port Hills and in Heathcote Valley, Mr Hall said that the population of. the county was likely to increase by between 2100 and 2700 in the next 20 years. The average number of persons per household had declined from 3.51 in 1971 to 3.36 in 1976. “Assuming this trend continues,; at
least 700 more houses will be required in the county bv the year 2001,” said Mr Hall. He said that good overall land use and management required long-term planning, as provided in the review,.. . . .. t “Residential* development will be : tightly , controlled .and in small stages with no mass earthworks, and so . the impact;-will be ' almost ' im- • perceptible.” Mr A.. H. Calder and Mr'% Calder, of 67 Albert Terrace, Hillsborough, .objected to the proposals •‘ fors.development on steep loess soilfC where the risk ■ of slip or subsidence was high.
